Guidelines & Practices
This “Gas Explosion Handbook” is one of the finest publications of its type.
Although not directly written for gas utility companies it is still a good reference.
Then and Now:
PROP Systems earliest algorithms were: - Developed into operating procedures that transformed the method used to perform FROST PATROLS in 6 heavily populated Downstate New York Counties, more efficiently and safely protecting the public. -Translated into state law in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. -Since then, PROP Systems algorithm development has increased by approximately 700%.

Aging gas and water pipe inventory
According to available information, the United States has over 2.6 million miles of natural gas pipelines, which includes both distribution and transmission lines, making up the total number of “gas mains” in the country as of 2023. Our potential natural gas market includes 85,000 miles of pipes in the U.S. (Please see below):
GAS PIPES
Of this total, some 15,000 miles of cast iron gas main (the most dangerous) still remains in active service. It is some of the most difficult to safely monitor and replace but the industry is doing its best.
- 70,000 additional miles of uncoated steel (pipe subject to corrosion (rot)) which was installed before 1970 (when buried pipe was required to be coated and protected) is still in service. The industry has not developed nor deployed any solutions to this issue.
WATER PIPES
According to recent studies, there are approximately 2.3 million miles of water mains in the United States.
- Approximately 33% of water mains in the US are considered "aging" and over 50 years old, representing around 770,000 miles of piping, highlighting a significant issue with aging water infrastructure in the country.
- In 2023, cast iron made up 23% of the water mains in the United States and Canada, according to a study by Utah State University (USU). A total of 19.4% of installed water mains are beyond their useful lives, representing approximately 452,000 miles of pipe.
- The water utility industry stopped using steel pipes in 1990 because of their corrosive issues which were adversely impacting drinking water quality.
